Trout and Perch are the main residents of the water as well as Red Breasted Mergansers. But not only is it a lake of beauty, Ullswater Lake has a fascinating history. For example, the steamers used to transport mail, slate and lead from local mines and soldiers during WWII and shortly after the war, Donald Campbell broke the world speed record, reaching 202mph along the 7.5 miles of water.
